The Physick Book of Deliverance Dance by Katherine Howe - review

Fans of historical fiction will love The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, which blends the Salem witch trials with the story of a contemporary graduate student in Massachusetts.

Connie Goodwin is preparing to write her dissertation when her mother asks her to clean out her grandmother's house, which has been empty for years.  When she finds a mysterious key, it leads her on a search for a long-lost book that will change her academic career and bring her into unanticipated danger.

Interspersed throughout are chapters chronicling the life of Deliverance Dane and her descendants.  Each of these chapters compliments the modern story, so they don't feel like an interruption.  By the end, even though you have a good idea of how it will turn out, you're still eager to know what happens.

It should be noted that people who want strict historical realism may be disappointed with some of the plot twists, but otherwise, this is a great listen.  The narrator does a wonderful job with both the modern and the historical characters, and the story itself is gripping enough to make you want to keep listening even when you have arrived at your destination.
